An ancient market town such as Hertford would not be complete without a heritage built on legend, myth, historical adventures and of course ......ghosts!!

In 1996 Keith Marshall of Marshall’s Furniture in Fore Street produced a video featuring interviews and

re-creations of ghostly happenings in many of the town centre premises. There were 12 stories on the original video and these have since been increased to 22 known places where ghostly apparitions have been witnessed.

The video is still available from his shop but has been recorded on to DVD format and this can now be purchased from this site. See DVD shop.

A map (click here to open new window for ghost map only) to accompany the tour along with a short description of each location can be downloaded from here. This is in .pdf format and the file also includes a map showing the location of a network of underground tunnels said to have been built by the Knights Templar. Hertford has only a very tenuous link to the Knights Templar in that in 1309 four of the six Templars from Bengeo (a suburb to the north of Hertford) were imprisoned in Hertford Castle following their arrest by Edward II, who believed they were holding a lost treasure (believed by many to be a reference to the Holy Grail).
